What's new

Every MagLab release, newest first. Updates are included with both plans.

1.1.3

MagLab 1.1.3

  • Guided tours: Getting around, Laying out sheets and The Designer point out what’s where, a stop at a time. The first runs when MagLab first opens, and the others are offered the first time their screen opens. Take any of them again from Show me around on Home or in Help.
  • Designer: Automatic or by hand: a switch at the top of the right-hand panel shows which. Adding, dragging or resizing a shape switches to placing shapes by hand, and MagLab now says so, with a Back to automatic button that restores the automatic layout as it was (the bar under the sheet shows it too). Die-cut shapes placed by hand go back to a packed layout, ¼” apart.
  • Die-cut stickers: a new Die-cut shape cuts round each design with an even border (white, any colour, or none), traced from a PNG’s transparency or a plain background. On a Packed template every sheet is packed with its own stickers by their outlines, keeping a set space between cut lines and turning stickers to fit (never, 90°, 45° or any angle, set in the Layout or the Designer; 45° turns are only kept when they fit more on a sheet); each design can have its own size. Built-in templates for die-cut stickers up to 2”, 3” and 4” on US Letter, A4 and A3. Cut lines follow each design on screen, in prints and PDFs. Export → Cut file saves each sheet’s own SVG or DXF, Export → Cricut saves every sticker as a transparent PNG for Print Then Cut, and PDFs can draw cut lines in a CutContour spot colour for a print shop’s cutter (also for automations’ PDF copies). Templates can print Silhouette registration marks. The local API takes a size for each sticker.

MagLab 1.1.0

  • New versions: MagLab says when there’s a new version, with a Download button that opens the download page. It says so once for each version (and again a week later if it still hasn’t been installed), and Settings → About shows it until then, with Check for updates to look straight away. MagLab looks on the MagLab website when it starts and twice a day, sending nothing about you or your work; switch it off with Settings → Tell me about new versions.

MagLab 1.0.9

  • Working hours (Automate → Working hours): choose when automation may print, for example only during the day so the printer stays quiet overnight, or only overnight so the day’s orders print while the shop is shut. Choose the days and times; a period that ends earlier than it starts (22:00–07:00) runs past midnight, and you can add more periods for different hours on some days. It applies to every automation (Shopify, hot folders, the local API, webhooks and order feeds). Outside working hours, orders still arrive and wait in the Print queue, then print in order when working hours start. A job that has started printing finishes, and jobs that only save a PDF (and /api/v1/render) don’t wait. Anything printed by hand from the Print queue (Print now, Retry, Print again, printing Shopify orders that are on hold or from the backlog) prints straight away. Switching a shop’s Print automatically on releases its held orders into working hours like new ones. The Print queue says which jobs are waiting and when they print, and Activity notes when working hours start and end. In the API, waiting jobs have "waitingFor": "working-hours" and waitingUntil, /api/v1/health reports workingHours, and a job sent with "ignoreWorkingHours": true prints straight away.
  • Hot folders: files whose job is still waiting in the Print queue are no longer queued a second time when MagLab restarts and scans the folder.
1.0.8

MagLab 1.0.8

  • Pictures on templates: add your logo, a mascot or any picture to a template in the Designer (Picture in the toolbar, or drop a picture file on the sheet): on every shape, such as a logo on every address label, or once per sheet. PNG transparency is kept; JPEG, WebP, GIF, HEIC and SVG work too. Pictures print in front of photos and text, or behind them (with an opacity, for a watermark), and only by shapes with a photo or text if you like. They’re saved inside the template, so they go with exported .mltpl files, saved layouts and automated jobs, and appear in blank-template PDF, PNG and SVG exports. A PDF stores each picture once however many shapes it’s on. The Designer warns when a picture is too small to print sharply at its size.
  • Drag text, pictures and lines on the sheet: in the Designer, click sheet text, a picture or a line to select it and drag it to move it, like a shape. It snaps to the grid and to the middle of the page or shape (with a guide line); ⌥ moves freely. Drag a picture’s corner to resize it, a line’s ends to reshape it, and double-click text to edit it. Arrow keys, ⌘D and ⌫ work on them too, and moving them leaves the automatic grid on. The selected one’s settings are in the right-hand panel; switching between every shape and once per sheet keeps it where it is.
  • Products: save a layout as a product (Save as product in the Layout toolbar), such as a sticker sheet with lots of different designs that you sell again and again, with a name and an optional SKU. Products are listed under Templates → Products with a preview of their designs; click one to open it as a new layout to print, and update it or save a new one from the toolbar. Products print on the library’s current version of their template, so template changes reach every product that uses it. Automation prints them too, once for each one ordered: a Shopify product or variant can print a saved product’s sheets (in the Design column; with shared sheets they print straight away, as they’re whole sheets), order feeds and webhooks have a new Product field (a path to the product’s name or SKU), and the local API and hot-folder JSON take items like {"product": "Cat stickers", "quantity": 2} (GET /api/v1/products lists them). Products are included in automation settings backups, and Clean up unused photos keeps their designs.
  • Edit a layout’s template: Edit next to the template in the Layout view opens it in the Designer; Done saves it and brings you back to your layout with the changes. Photos stay in their shapes (and keep their crop unless the shape changed size), and photos from removed shapes move to empty ones. The back arrow returns without the changes.
  • Text indents: the Designer’s Default text style has a left and right indent, to keep addresses clear of a logo at the side of a label. Keep text clear of it on a picture sets it for you.
1.0.7

MagLab 1.0.7

  • Shopify (Pro): connect one or several shops in Automate → Shopify by making an app in Shopify’s Dev Dashboard and pasting in its two codes. MagLab checks for paid orders every minute and prints your customers’ photos, with no webhook or server to set up. Orders placed while your computer was off print when MagLab next starts, and printed orders are tagged maglab-printed in Shopify.
  • Nothing prints until you say so: a new shop starts with Print automatically off, and orders from before you connected wait as backlog, for you to print or skip.
  • Templates and designs per product: choose a template for each product or variant, or a ready-made design that prints for each one ordered. Sync products lets you set them up before anyone orders.
  • Address labels print with each order from its shipping address, on their own printer or as a PDF.
  • Shared sheets: orders can share sheets so none print half empty. They print when a sheet is full, at set times or when you click Print now, with each order number next to its shapes.
  • Webhooks: a resent order prints only once, and an order with nothing to print no longer counts as a failed delivery.
  • Fixes: Print again after a restart no longer leaves photos blank, and Help & feedback works again on Raspberry Pi and Linux.
1.0.6

MagLab 1.0.6

  • Address labels from shop CSVs: importing a Shopify orders CSV now uses the shipping name and address (not the order number or billing address), and Etsy’s “Street 2” line is picked up. Extra rows for orders with several items no longer make empty labels.
  • A3 paper: every pin-back button and magnet template now comes on A3 as well as A4 and US Letter (29 new templates, 108 in all; a 2¼” button sheet fits 24 on A3). A3 is in the template list’s paper filter and can be the default paper in Settings.
1.0.5

MagLab 1.0.5

  • Mac builds without a Developer ID are now signed ad hoc, so macOS offers Open Anyway for a downloaded copy instead of calling it damaged.
  • Clearer user guide and API reference, with a new section on your subscription.
  • Help & feedback in the sidebar: open the user guide, see keyboard shortcuts, and email a question, problem report or feature idea. The email is filled in for you, optionally with MagLab’s version, licence and printer names. The address and links come from support in licensing.config.json (npm run app:dev now reads it too).
  • The Layout tab no longer says “No job open” before a layout is open. It now shows Start a layout: what a layout is, three steps for first-timers, recent layouts to carry on with, and “What are you making?” tiles that open the template list on the right category. It also suggests calibrating the printer until that’s done.
  • Saved layouts are called layouts throughout (Home’s Recent layouts, and new layouts are named “… layout”).
1.0.4
