MagLab and Cricut Design Space
Design Space is Cricut's own app for designing and cutting on a Cricut machine. MagLab lays out and prints sheets for any cutter, or none. Many people use both: MagLab for the sheet and the print, Design Space for the cut.
Side by side
| Feature | MagLab | Cricut Design Space |
|---|---|---|
| What it cuts with | Anything: scissors, a trimmer, a punch, a button cutter or a cutting machine. MagLab doesn't cut | A Cricut machine |
| How prints line up with cuts | Calibrates your printer once, so every print is at exact size and in the right place | Print Then Cut prints sensor marks around the design, and the Cricut reads them |
| How much of the page you can use | Up to the edges your printer can print | Less: part of the page is kept for the sensor marks, and the limit depends on your machine and paper |
| Cut line traced around each design | No: designs go into template shapes | Yes |
| Filling sheets | Set how many of each design and it fills as many sheets as it takes | Set the number of copies of each project before you print |
| Templates | 108 built in: pin-back buttons, magnets, 17 Avery label sheets, thermal labels, cards and photos | Its own image and project library, with more in Cricut Access |
| Shop orders printed by themselves | With MagLab Pro | No |
| Cut files | Exports an SVG of the cut lines, which Design Space can open | Cuts directly |

Choose Cricut Design Space if
- You make Print Then Cut stickers on a Cricut and they fit within its page limits: the sensor marks already line the cut up with the print, so you may not need MagLab.
- You want the cut line to follow the outline of each design.
Choose MagLab if
- You cut without sensor marks: with a trimmer, a punch, a button cutter or a machine cutting from a file.
- You make pin-back buttons, magnets, Avery labels or business cards, where the print has to be exactly the right size.
- You print address labels from a pasted list or an Etsy or Shopify CSV.
- You want to fill sheets with many designs in different quantities without arranging them by hand.
- You want to use more of each sheet, or your shop orders to print by themselves.
Questions
More on the pricing page and in the user guide.
Can I use MagLab with my Cricut?
Yes. Lay out and print the sheet in MagLab, export the SVG cut file and open it in Design Space to cut. Calibrate your printer in MagLab first, so the print lands where the cut file expects it.
Why not just use Print Then Cut?
If it does what you need, keep using it: Cricut reads the printed sensor marks, so its cuts line up with the print. MagLab helps when you cut without those marks, need the print at an exact size, as for buttons and labels, or want more of the page than Print Then Cut leaves you.
