Avery label templates with 16 labels per sheet

Avery's 16-per-sheet label template, L7162 (J8162 for inkjets): the label size, how to open it in Word or Google Docs, and fixes for misaligned prints.

By Ryan Soanes · 1 November 2026

Avery’s 16-per-sheet labels are L7162, for laser printers, and J8162, the same layout for inkjets. Both are A4 sheets of 16 labels, 99.1 × 33.9 mm each, in two columns of eight. There are free templates for it, and it’s built into Word.

Which codes have 16 labels per sheet?

Code Paper Label size Labels per sheet
L7162 A4, laser 99.1 × 33.9 mm 16
J8162 A4, inkjet 99.1 × 33.9 mm 16

US Letter has no common 16-per-sheet Avery label. The nearest are 5162 (14 labels, 1⅓ × 4”) and 5161 (20 labels, 1 × 4”), which are about the same width as L7162. Avery label template codes lists the other common sheets.

How do you open the template in Word?

  1. Go to Mailings → Labels → Options.
  2. Under Label vendors, choose Avery A4/A5, then pick L7162 (or J8162).
  3. Click OK, then New Document. Word makes a page with a box for each label.
  4. Type into each box, or use Mailings → Start Mail Merge → Labels to fill them from a spreadsheet of addresses.

You can also download the template from Avery’s website by searching for the code.

Can you use it in Google Docs?

Google Docs has no Avery layouts built in. Either open Avery’s Word template in Google Docs, or use a label add-on from the Extensions menu. Print a test page and check it lines up, as the table can shift slightly when a Word file is opened in Docs.

Why don’t the labels line up?

Usually it’s one of these:

  • Scaling. Print at 100% or “Actual size”, never “Fit to page”.
  • Paper size. Set the print dialog to A4. If it’s set to US Letter, the printer shrinks or shifts the page.
  • The wrong template. Check the code on the pack matches the template.

Print a test page on plain paper and hold it against a label sheet up to the light. If every label is off by the same amount, move the page margins by that amount. If the error grows down the page, the template is wrong for the sheet, or the printer is printing slightly too small. Why your prints don’t line up with your cutter shows how to measure it with a ruler.

When should you use 16 per sheet instead of 21 or 30?

When you need a wide label: a long address, a logo with the address, or a product name. L7162 labels are about 1½ times as wide as 5160’s 2⅝” labels. The cost is fewer labels per sheet: 50 labels take four sheets at 16 per sheet, and two at 30.

How do you reuse a sheet you’ve set up?

In Word, use File → Save As and save it as a Word template (.dotx), so each new batch opens a fresh copy. Or save the finished sheet as a PDF, which prints the same every time.

MagLab has the L7162 sheet built in: drop in your designs, or a spreadsheet of addresses, and it fills all 16 labels in one click.
