The code on a pack of Avery labels, such as 5160 or L7160, tells you the paper size, how many labels are on each sheet and their exact size. Match the template to that code and the print lands on the labels. Here are the common codes, with their sizes.
US Letter codes
US codes are numbers, such as 5160. The 5000s are for laser printers, and the matching 8000 code (8160 for 5160) is the same layout for inkjets.
| Code | Labels per sheet | Label size | Usual use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5160 / 8160 | 30 | 1 × 2⅝” | Address labels |
| 5161 | 20 | 1 × 4” | Address labels |
| 5162 | 14 | 1⅓ × 4” | Address labels |
| 5163 | 10 | 2 × 4” | Shipping labels |
| 5164 | 6 | 3⅓ × 4” | Shipping labels |
| 5167 | 80 | ½ × 1¾” | Return address labels |
| 5168 | 4 | 3½ × 5” | Large labels |
| 5126 | 2 | 5½ × 8½” | Half-sheet shipping labels |
| 8371 | 10 | 2 × 3½” | Business cards |
A4 codes
A4 codes start with L for laser printers. The matching J code is the same layout for inkjets: J8160 for L7160, J8162 for L7162, and so on.
| Code | Labels per sheet | Label size | Usual use |
|---|---|---|---|
| L7651 | 65 | 38.1 × 21.2 mm | Mini labels |
| L7160 | 21 | 63.5 × 38.1 mm | Address labels |
| L7161 | 18 | 63.5 × 46.6 mm | Address labels |
| L7162 | 16 | 99.1 × 33.9 mm | Address labels |
| L7163 | 14 | 99.1 × 38.1 mm | Parcel labels |
| L7173 | 10 | 99.1 × 57 mm | Shipping labels |
| L7165 | 8 | 99.1 × 67.7 mm | Parcel labels |
| L7169 | 4 | 99.1 × 139 mm | Parcel labels |
| L7168 | 2 | 199.6 × 143.5 mm | Half-sheet labels |
There are free templates for all of these, as PDFs with guides and PNGs for Canva. For CD and DVD labels, Avery 5931 has two round disc labels per sheet, plus thin spine labels.
Are US and A4 codes interchangeable?
No. The sheets are different sizes (US Letter is 216 × 279 mm, A4 is 210 × 297 mm) and the labels are laid out differently. L7160 is the nearest A4 sheet to 5160, but it has 21 labels of 63.5 × 38.1 mm where 5160 has 30 of 66.7 × 25.4 mm. Use the template for the code on your pack.
How do you open an Avery template in Word?
Word has most Avery layouts built in:
- Go to Mailings → Labels → Options.
- Under Label vendors, choose Avery US Letter or Avery A4/A5.
- Pick your product number, click OK, then New Document.
- Type into each label, or use Mailings → Start Mail Merge → Labels to fill them from a spreadsheet of addresses.
You can also search the code on Avery’s template site and download a Word or PDF template. Print Etsy and Shopify addresses on Avery labels shows how to turn an order spreadsheet into a sheet of labels.
Why doesn’t the print line up with the labels?
Check these before printing on real labels:
- Scale: print at 100% or “Actual size”, not “Fit to page”.
- Paper size: set the print dialog to the paper in the tray, US Letter or A4.
- The template: make sure it matches the code on the pack.
- A test sheet: print one on plain paper and hold it against a label sheet up to the light.
If every label is shifted the same way, or the error grows down the page, the printer itself is slightly out. Why your prints don’t line up with your cutter shows how to measure it with a ruler and fix it.
Can you print your own designs on Avery labels?
Yes. The template is just the label positions, so you can put a logo, a product label or a sticker design in each box. MagLab has these sheets built in: drop in your designs, or a spreadsheet of addresses, and it fills the sheet in one click.
