Inkjet sticker paper: which finish to buy
Matte, glossy, clear, vinyl or holographic: which inkjet sticker paper suits your stickers, and the printer settings that work for each.

Choose sticker paper by where the sticker will go. Matte or glossy paper is fine for stickers that stay dry indoors. Printable vinyl lasts better on bottles, laptops and anything that gets handled. Clear and holographic sheets are for effects. Whichever you choose, buy sheets made for inkjet printers.
Will any sticker paper work in an inkjet printer?
No. Buy sheets that say they’re for inkjet printers. They have a coating that soaks up liquid ink and holds it in place. On laser sticker paper, inkjet ink sits on the surface and smears. Thermal label rolls are for thermal label printers, which use heat instead of ink.
Which finish suits which sticker?
| Finish | What it is | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Matte paper | Paper with a flat, non-shiny coating | Packaging, envelopes, planners, stickers you write on |
| Glossy paper | Paper with a shiny coating; colours look brighter | Stickers that stay indoors and dry |
| Printable vinyl | Thin plastic film | Laptops, bottles, anything handled or wet |
| Clear | Transparent plastic film | Designs where the surface shows through |
| Holographic | Rainbow foil under a printable coating | Shiny effect stickers |
Paper is the cheapest. Vinyl, clear and holographic sheets cost more, so it’s worth packing each sheet tightly.
Is “waterproof” glossy sticker paper really waterproof?
Usually only the sticker material is. Dye ink on top of it can still run when it gets wet. Pigment ink, or a clear laminate over the print, is what keeps the print safe. Weatherproof matte inkjet sticker paper covers ink, laminate and how to test a sheet.
How is printable vinyl different from sticker paper?
Printable vinyl is a thin plastic film with an inkjet coating. It bends round curves, such as bottles, without creasing, and it doesn’t go soggy when it gets wet. It’s tougher to cut than paper, so it needs a firmer setting on a cutting machine. For outdoor stickers, laminate it too, as the ink can still run.
How do you print on clear sticker paper?
Home inkjet printers can’t print white. On clear sheets, anything white in your design comes out clear, and light colours look faint because the surface shows through. Bold, dark designs work best.
- Print on the coated side. The pack says which side it is.
- Use the paper setting the pack recommends. If it doesn’t say, try a glossy photo paper setting.
- Let it dry longer than paper. Ink sits on the film and smudges if you touch it too soon.
How does holographic sticker paper work?
The rainbow foil sits under a coating your printer prints on. Because your printer can’t print white, the foil shows through wherever your design is white or blank, and the ink covers it everywhere else. Leave white areas where you want the shine. Dark designs that cover the whole sticker hide the effect, and small text can be hard to read over the pattern.
How do you stop inkjet stickers smudging?
- Let them dry before you cut, stack or laminate them: a few hours at least, and longer on glossy, clear and holographic sheets.
- Match the paper setting to the sheet, so the printer doesn’t put down more ink than the coating can hold.
- Protect stickers that get handled with a clear laminate sheet, or a few light coats of a clear sealant spray made for prints.
How do you fit more stickers on a sheet?
MagLab fills a sheet in one click: drop in your designs, say how many of each, and it packs shaped stickers by their outlines rather than their boxes. More stickers per sheet means fewer sheets, which counts most on vinyl, clear and holographic paper.
